Weather related Game and Practice Cancellations
Mark Gallagher
Sunday, June 06 2010 @ 07:00 AM EDT

Soccer 2010Please be advised that it is very difficult for Quinndale Council members to inform coaches and parents of Rain out or other weather related cancellations, in a timely manor (remember we work too), therefore, most Lightning and Rainout cancellation decisions will be made at the field before the game/practice. Note: Coaches have the right to cancel practices due to poor weather conditions, but Quinndale Council is responsible to apply all the City of Hamilton Sports field policies. Only the Referee and Quinndale Convenor will make the decision about canceling games. When City of Hamilton cancels all sports field activities, there shall be no games or practices at Quinndale. These policies are in place to ensure safety of players, spectators and officials and to prevent significant damage to the sports fields. Please see the City of Hamilton Lightning and Rainout Policies below.

Lightning Safety Program for City of Hamilton Athletic Fields: At the first signs of lightning or thunder, leave the field. Go to your vehicle and take shelter there with the windows rolled up. ("If you can hear it (thunder), Clear It (suspend activities)." AVOID the rain and sun shelters and the dugout areas. These are not safe from lightning. AVOID going underneath trees. Trees "attract" lightning. AVOID metal fences, gates, and tall light poles and power poles. Wait 30 minutes after the last observed lightning or thunder before you leave shelter. Game officials will signal a resumption of activities. Example: if the last sighting of lightning or sound of thunder occurs between 6:30PM and 7PM the 7PM game will be cancelled. If the last sighting of lightening or sound of thunder occurs at 7:15PM the 8PM would still be played, unless additional lightning or thunder occurs after 7:30PM Rain out Policy- City of Hamilton Athletic Fields: Sports Fields in the City of Hamilton will be considered UNPLAYABLE if the following conditions exist: 1) Visual ponding of water on the surface of the field 2) Water sponging up round your feet when walking on the field If either of these conditions exists, then the field will be considered UNPLAYABLE and the practice cancelled and the game will be rescheduled The city website www.Hamilton.ca/rec. will post city wide sports field cancellations, but even when there is no official city wide cancellation, Quinndale Council is still responsible to evaluate the condition of our fields and apply the city Rainout policy. These cancellations must be adhered to, as the city has stated there are consequences, if we do not.
